Surfing tips – 8 ways to make your summer more fun.

Surfing season is upon us. And by this, we mean high season when those who’ve been hibernating for winter come out and play. Summer in the Northern Hemisphere means more time on the water. Longer days, more light in the mornings and evenings and warmer sea and air temps. It’s all looking rosy. However, if you’ve had the same routine for a while here are 7 ways to make your surfing summer even more fun.

Dry your surfing kit efficiently, with EXIT.

There’s nothing worse than hitting the beach, the surf pumping and your wetsuit cold, damp and festering from the session previous. We feel your pain. Having been in the same situation ourselves we know how uncomfortable this can be. Especially if it’s cooler. After all, just because it’s summer doesn’t guarantee we’ll be enjoying 30C heat waves all the time!

But fear not! EXIT is here! And with our unique, innovative and effective XRail surfing wetsuit hanger your kit will be dryer than a dry thing in a desert come the next session. And don’t forget it doesn’t stop there. All EXIT watersports accessories are designed to help you get out and live more, surf often and be outdoors and in the waves every chance you can get.

Change your local surfing spot.

This is a tricky one we know. As we’re all creatures of habit. If something works then why try and change it. FOMO is real when you have a crew at your regular surfing spot telling you how good the waves are. But switching your local to somewhere new can offer a refreshing change.

Surf more!

We’re not suggesting ditching the regular. But heading somewhere different – even if just around the corner – can be a good thing. And if it isn’t then you’ve done and can head back to your ‘comfy slipper’.

Change what you surf.

There’s been much said about using the wrong kind of surfboard during recent years. Trying to ride the same ‘toothpick’ surfboard that Jo Pro uses is folly. Instead, using a sled that fits your ability, general surfing conditions and your aspiration is a much better bet. However, even your tried and trusted can feel a bit stagnant sometimes.

Instead, this summer why not experiment with different surfboard shapes and even surf craft in general. Fringe surfing (mat surfing, tray riding, bellyboarding and body surfing to name a few) all offer unique ways to enjoy the surf. Mixing your riding up will make you a more rounded surfer. Plus, it can be fun.

Surf more.

This is an obvious one. And we appreciate it mighn’t be that easy to accomplish. But if you can get in more then do so. As we become more accomplished surfers there’s a tendency to be more picky with conditions. Before long we’re just after perfection, which won’t amount to score time. At least in most real world surfing locations.

Surf more!

Howling onshores with massive currents are one thing. But small and crumbly can often be doable. And in a lot of cases end up being more fun than you’d imagine. It can be hard to find motivation when the waves look average. So you have to make yourself get wet. Trust us though, the more you ride the more fun your surf will be.

Mix up your surf craft.

Surfing these days doesn’t have to mean only riding a 6’ or something shortboard. There are far more ways to enjoy wave riding. Grovel boards, mid lengths, longboards, eggs and so on all have their place depending on conditions.

Be open minded and mix up your surfing craft.

In recent times the whole fringe surfing movement has gained pace. Nowadays it’s not uncommon to find bellyboarders, tray surfers, mat riders, hand planers and so on inhabiting lineups. And this is a positive thing. As with above your standard shortboard may not be the best craft on the day. Whereas a bodyboard might be.

Take a surfing holiday.

At some point you may need a change – we all do. Surfing holidays are a good way to reset and experience somewhere new. And we’re not just talking overseas either. Although there’s nothing quite like surfing every day in boardshorts and bikinis!

Surfing holidays can be a great way to reset.

Closer to home surf trips can yield good results if you’re able to move on a forecast. Even if you can’t, just being in a different place is refreshing. Should you decide to hop on a plane and get gone there’s lots of choice. A two week surf trip somewhere can often revitalise your surfing stoke.

Surf with your family more often.

If you have family then get them involved. They may already follow in your surfing footsteps. But if not encourage them to get wet. Even in a low key fashion. Utilising those aforementioned alternative surf craft could see your family get bug bitten and want more of it.

Surf with your family.

There’s a huge amount of pleasure to be had by sharing wave riding experiences with your family. If you have young kids there’ll be plenty of proud parent moments along the way. Just take things easy with groms. There’s no pressure!

Do the dawnie. And do the sunset sesh.

Hitting the beach for dawn’s crack, and paddling out at sunrise is meditative. On those calm mornings with less people will be around so it’s a good way to avoid the crowds. Especially during summer.

Every surfer should do the dawnie.

Sunset sessions can also be great. When everyone else has got out paddling for waves, basking in the last glowing embers of the sun’s rays, is good for the soul. As with dawn raids, there’ll often be less people about.

Cross train with other sports.

Sometimes the surf goes flat. In which case you’ll indeed have another way of scratching that surfing itch. The same when conditions just aren’t favourable – i.e. too windy. But there’s always something to do. If you’re open minded enough. A lot of which can help with your surfing.

Cross training (without wanting to sound like it’s akin to gym work) is a way to keep surfing fit and sharp for that next session. It could be something like skateboarding, or perhaps paddle sports – stand up, sit down or prone. Whatever it is that compliments your wave shredding, make sure you use it to good effect. After all, these additional activities may be just as much fun as surfing itself.

Summing up your surfing summer.

If surfing is your passion then simply put: surf as much as you can this summer. But don’t think this means just waiting for good waves and surfing your standard shortboard. As mentioned above there are more ways to skin a cat.

And to ensure you can get wet as often as possible EXIT can supply you with the best watersports and wetsuits drying accessories to make sure you’re locked and loaded for each session. Head over to the EXIT online shop here for a full list of surfing accessories.
